Unveil AMORAMARGO | New Fashion Collection SS 18 ECLECTIC By Rafael Amargo
Life As A Portfolio
Making Every Day A New Opportunity To Create
“Rafael, what are we wearing?”,
Says one of the flamenco performers to Amargo in the backstage just a few hours before the show started. Rafael Amargo – a Flamenco dancer that became a celebrity in Spain because of his talent and spectacular career as a Bailaor and choreographer. He embodies the typical Spanish passionate personality and charm.
“I am pure theater, I see performance and drama in everything. What you are seeing (the models and flamenco singers everywhere backstage) is what I like, it’s what makes me happy.”
He presented his fashion brand AmorAmargo (bitter love in Spanish) at 080 Barcelona Fashion Week. Rafael’s first Spring/Summer 2018 collection is unceremonious yet with a twist, mixing different types of patterns and silhouettes, sport fabrics with embroidery and tulle with denim. The name “Eclectic” of the collection encompasses his varied taste and complex personality celebrating diversity and freedom.
“I had so many ideas, concepts and feelings that I wanted to show, as a result the only name I could come up with was Eclectic”, affirms the designer.
The show was a balanced mix between a flamenco performance and a catwalk, including different singers performing typical Andalusian songs while walking down the runway, making “Eclectic”, Rafael’s debut in the fashion world. It was an ode to Spanish roots, reflecting how Amargo embodies the Spanish passion for living. To him, Barcelona Fashion Week was the best way to show his collection as he has an emotional memory attached to the city.
“Barcelona saw me grow as a professional, it is the first city where I sold out a show, I owed it to the city.”
Fashion is, to Amargo, an extension to his artistic career as a dancer and choreographer. A long time ago he started designing the costumes for his own shows and taking control of all the aesthetics of the show.
“I always loved designing the costumes for my dance company and I always tailor-made my clothes so I can tell them exactly what I want to wear, so when some producers from Italy contacted me, I knew it was my time to do it.”
