AIRE Ancient Baths New York | A Unique Journey of Body and Mind

If you are a New Yorker with a hectic lifestyle or a tourist wanting to relax and unwind after exploring all the sights New York City has to offer, a visit to AIRE Ancient Thermal Baths, located at 88 Franklin Street in trendy TriBeCa, may just be the thing to do if you can set aside about 2 hours for yourself.

AIRE provides a combination of Ancient Thermal Baths, Special Rituals, and Signature Experiences. The facility was designed in the style of Roman baths further emphasized by the décor immediately apparent upon entry.

AIRE lets guests experience various different pools in a tranquil spa-like atmosphere. The Flotarium is a salt-water pool where guests float on the surface of the water which is possible because of the deep salt content compared to that in the Dead Sea. A relaxing experience further enhanced by the dim lights, burning candles all around, calming sounds of music and the aroma of orange blossoms. Before entering the Flotarium guests can rinse off with a salt rub at the nearby shower.

The Temperature Pools such as the Caldarium, Tepidarium, and Frigidarium come in temperatures of 105F, 97F as well as 57F and an icy 50F version. Brrr!! During my visit, no one went into the cold pools and neither did I.

The Jet Pool, a combination of different strengths jets, is meant to work on the guest’s muscles in preparation for a massage, which can be booked and is done after the ancient baths experience.

What to expect at AIRE Ancient Baths

Upon arrival, guests are registered and served warm tea as well as cold water while waiting to proceed to the locker room to change into their swimsuits and a robe as well as special water booties provided by the establishment. Cell phones are not allowed in the ancient baths area so as to not disturb the silence and relaxation of other guests. First-time visitors will receive a tour given by an AIRE staff member during which the different kinds of pools are explained. Thereafter guests are free to move from one pool to another based on their preferences within their 90-minute visit.

A Steam Room, or Laconicum, with aromatherapy fragrances, is another experience to indulge in before you transition to the Relaxation Area where heated marble stones allow your body and mind to rest while enjoying herbal tea, special juices or water.  Unless a massage treatment was booked in advance, it’s then back to reality and NYC’s hustle and bustle.
